Hi,

For the past few weeks I have been getting automated-looking user registrations on my website, recently several per day. The usernames are random strings of letters, and the accounts have no forum activity.

The accounts appear both in wpForo → Members and in WordPress → Users, where their role is Subscriber.

My current settings are:

• WordPress Settings → General → Anyone can register is enabled.
• wpForo Enable User Registration is enabled.
• wpForo email confirmation is enabled.
• wpForo Google reCAPTCHA v2 Checkbox is configured with API keys.
• reCAPTCHA is enabled for both the wpForo Registration Form and WordPress Registration Form (as well as login/reset forms).
• wpForo Spam Control is enabled.
• Ban user when spam is suspected is enabled.
• Advanced and IP-based Flood Protection are enabled.
• Akismet is installed and active.

Nevertheless, bot-looking accounts are continuing to be created.

I also have WooCommerce and the plugin Login & Register Forms – Popup, Slider, Profile & WooCommerceinstalled, so I am wondering whether the registrations might be bypassing the wpForo registration form through another WordPress registration endpoint.

Could you please advise me how to determine which registration route these accounts are using, and whether there is a way in wpForo to confirm that reCAPTCHA is actually being executed and validated when these accounts are created?

I am not a developer, so if you need me to check something, I would appreciate step-by-step instructions.

The other day my host said I must reduce rows in database as there was over a million, which is their limit.  We did this.

Then, a couple of days ago they said "the account is still using a much higher amount of CPU than most of the accounts on the server with similar traffic, so additional optimization should be done."

I have been trying to look into this and saw that there were far more visitors than I would expect, up to 5.6k some days.  So today I added CloudFlare.

Now I have just received an email from host saying that "the resource usage for this account is not only high, but has increased."   I have no idea why it is increasing.

They say my choices are "to either remove the WPForo plugin or move the account to a proper hosting environment immediately."

It is a non-profit site run as a hobby and there is no way a VPS can be afforded.

Is there anything I can do?

This is a problem in two ways: automated crawlers hitting these URLs cause load spikes, but even a legitimate logged-in member clicking "mark all read" would wait 15–30 seconds for the action to complete. Please check this image https://ibb.co/0jpwdLnS

Could you advise:

1. What does foro=allread do internally that could take this long? Is it iterating over all topics across all forums per request?
2. Are there settings to limit its scope, or is this a known performance issue with a fix or workaround?
3. Is this improved in a newer wpForo version?

My environment, for reference: wpForo v3.1.2 , WordPress on Cloudways (NGINX/PHP-FPM Lightning stack), Elasticsearch via ElasticPress, Redis object cache, Cloudflare Enterprise in front.

If setting the excerpt length to 0, the autorefresh is disabled. It is impossible to set the excerpt to 0. Only 1 character is possible.

By the way: Please consider to let there be an excerpt for "Recent Topics", too.

I purchsed WP Discuz Widgets, but I miss a similar designed simple widget like the ones in WPForo. I would like to present them in a grid of three columns. And the WPDiscuz-Widget does not match the design of WPForo.
