If someone was mentioned by name in a reply the email notification link takes them to page 9 for latest post.

To patch this I have added the code mentioned above so that newest posts show up on page 1 instead of page 9.

However, when someone now posts the post will show up on page 1 but the page refresh after posting redirects to page 9.  Any suggestions on how I should be trying to fix this so they stay on same page?

This is the new way to show replies/posts in reversed order. So the new replies will be on the top, right after the first post of the topic. You should put this code to the current active WordPress theme functions.php file:
