I think all users have Facebook account. On Facebook, you should click the main icon (not popuped icons) to cancel the vote. wpForo like/dislike works like that.

Sure, i'm used to Github, Facebook is something i don't use or like.

it seems that you must click on the main icon and not up or down. Still not clear and users will not understand (and so did i). You should click the main icon to cancel your vote. I mean the popup buttons cannot cancel the vote, only the main button cancel it, it cancels both.
