Title: Chinese usernames / Unicode usernames support in wpForo
Message:
Hello wpForo team,
I’m running a Chinese-language community forum (China / Asia users).
Currently, users cannot register using Chinese characters as usernames — registration fails if the username contains Unicode (e.g. Chinese).
I understand that WordPress core traditionally limits usernames to Latin characters, but for a Chinese forum, many users expect to use Chinese names.
I’d like to ask:
-
Does wpForo officially support Unicode / Chinese usernames?
-
If not, is this a design limitation or a security consideration?
-
Is there a recommended approach from wpForo for Chinese forums?
-
For example: English login username + Chinese display name
-
-
Are there any hooks / filters planned or available to safely allow Unicode usernames?
I want to keep the forum stable and secure, so I prefer an officially supported solution rather than custom hacks.
Thank you for your guidance.
Best regards,
Simon

Dear Simon,
Please note, wpForo itself doesn’t enforce the Latin-only username restriction — the restriction comes from WordPress core. When a user registers, WordPress controls the username sanitization and validation, and by default, WordPress only allows Latin (ASCII) characters in usernames.

The same question is discussed there.
