Hi everyone! I'm in the process of setting up my very first wpForo community and I'm trying to figure out the best way to organize it. For those of you running established forums: do you recommend starting with just a few broad forums and adding sub-forums later as the community grows, or is it better to plan out a detailed structure from day one?

I'd love to hear what worked (or didn't work) for you. Thanks!

Hi smalltextgenerator,

Great question, and it's smart that you're thinking about structure before launching! Based on wpForo's architecture, here's what I'd recommend: start with a lean structure and expand thoughtfully as your community grows. Here's why this works well with wpForo's three-level hierarchy:

wpForo organizes content in this structure:

Board (optional)
  └── Category (forum with is_category=true)
        └── Forum (regular forum)
              └── Subforum (nested forum)
                    └── Topics
                          └── Posts/Replies

My recommendation is to start with just 2-4 main categories that reflect your community's core topics, with maybe 1-2 forums under each. This keeps navigation simple for new members and prevents the "analysis paralysis" that can happen when you see too many empty sections. Here's a step-by-step approach:

  1. Create your initial categories – Think about the broadest themes your community will discuss (e.g., "General Discussion," "Help & Support," "Announcements")
  2. Add just 1-2 forums per category – Resist the urge to create every subcategory you think you might need
  3. Monitor activity for 2-4 weeks – See where conversations naturally cluster and where users struggle to find the right place to post
  4. Add subforums incrementally – Once you have active discussion, you'll have real data to guide where to split forums or add new ones

The beauty of this approach is that wpForo makes it easy to reorganize later without losing content. An overly complex structure at launch often frustrates new members and makes your forum feel inactive. As your community grows, you'll naturally see where the demand is for additional organization.

What type of community are you building? That might help me give you more specific category suggestions!
