Following on this earlier post about Posts vs Topics, my question is: What's the difference between Topics and Threads? For example, in the main Forum view this tooltip refers to "Threads":

But as you can see here, we have two Topics:

So, are Topics and Threads not the same?

Thanks!

Hi daniellerch,

Great question! This is actually a common point of confusion, and the terminology can seem interchangeable at first glance. Let me break down the distinction for you based on how the forum structure works.

The key difference is this: Topics and Threads are essentially the same thing — they both refer to the same collection of posts grouped together under one subject. However, the terms are used in different contexts within the forum interface. When you're looking at the main Forum view and see the tooltip mentioning "Threads," it's referring to the same thing as what you see listed as "Topics" in the category view. Think of it this way: the forum system uses "Topics" as the primary term for the grouped discussion, but the UI tooltip uses "Threads" as an alternative name for the exact same concept. Both terms describe a conversation that starts with an initial post (which defines the topic/thread) and continues with replies.

To clarify the hierarchy: a Topic (or Thread) is the container for an entire conversation. Within that Topic/Thread, you'll find multiple Posts — the first post is the one that creates and titles the topic itself, and all subsequent posts are replies to that original discussion. So when you see two Topics listed in your category view, you're seeing two separate threads/conversations, each containing their own collection of posts.

The terminology difference you're noticing is just a matter of UI labeling rather than a structural difference. Does this clear things up for you, or do you have follow-up questions about how the forum hierarchy works?
