What is the short code instead on landing on the main forum I want the members to land on the community/recent/

I have tried all kinds of variations
[wpforo ="community/recent/ "]
and so on...

Hi,

You can achieve this by changing the URL in the Appearance > Menu admin page.

So, go to Dashboard > Appearance > Menu admin page, edit the corresponding menu, find the correct menu item, and insert /%wpforo-recent%/ in the URL.
