My forum is online for years and has many image attachments. I just realized that the images are not shown anymore and 'add attachment' button does not do anything if I click on it. The attachments are all there if I go to the attachment section in the wordpress back-end.
If I edit an old post with an attachment in it, the attachment line changes to:
I did not change the WPforo settings and I'm logged as admin. Any idea what happened... an update maybe???

You use the Advanced Attachments plug-in and you should better ask your question here https://gvectors.com/forum/wpforo-advanced-attachments/
However, you can disable any other plugins to see if Advanced Attachments then works
if so, then reactivate one by one to find out which one is causing the issue
maybe you are using an old version of Advanced Attachments that is not compatible with the current version of wpForo 1.9.6
