Fabian, I strongly suggest you and others to create a test site on a sub domain.

Everything new, I install it on the test site and only after few days of testing it moves to the live site. In addition, I never install more then one plugin per 24 hr period so if anything fails I can restore to last night from the backup.

Sorry for stealing your thread but I think that this point is very important.
My live site never fail because everything is tested first on the test site and whatever doesn't work goes to the trash.
