I wanted to create a separate topic for this just in case anyone else was looking for this information too. But it appears that I'm able to create just about any user name I want, good or bad. How would I go about applying a filter to this process to avoid user exploiting the system? And could this system apply to forum posts and comments as well?

User, Registrations, Logins, User Names are all handled by Wordpress and not wpForo. wpForo just provides kind of a "form" for them.
So you can do this using a WP plugin.
