1/. After initial installation and setting up the forums and topic areas, when I viewed the forum it looked like the attachment image1.png.  so a large empty space to the left.  I am assuming that the blank area should be populated as your forum is?

This is a widget cache issue, please put some widget in wpForo sidebar and in main right sidebar, then remove them. After this widget cache will be updated. Also I'd recommend use a full width page template for wpForo. Just edit forum page and manage page template section.

2/. when trying to add a link to a post - I get the following box, the heading text that is to the right of the text boxes is white, and the text boxes themselves just have white text in them.

I didn't follow you, please leave some screenshot.

Also please find attached a screen shot of the issue in point 2.  When I click the insert link button I get a dialog that has the text in it (i highlighted URL) but it is all white.  In the lables and text boxes.

yup, that has sorted it all out.  running full page and no cache issues.

Navigate in Dashboard to Forums > Settings > Styles admin page and put this CSS code in ""Custom CSS Code" textarea. Then save, delete cache and do Ctrl+F5 on front-end.
