Probably your website has JS errors, and those affects wpForo editor JS functions. Please leave some URL to allow us inspect this.

New user registered was also told to await "pending authorization" from admin.. I've looked through the setup and can't find where to authorize new users. And is there a way to auto authorize new users? Thanks!

Ok, there is no way to debug your site specific issue from front-end. Please fallow these steps:
- Deactivate all other plugins one by one, after each deactivation delete cache, refresh forum page and check the editor.
- If it doesn't help you should switch to the default theme, delete cache and check it again.
This is a simple conflict with some plugin or current active theme.
