Is another way than Google reCAPTCHA against robots.
I do not get recaptcha well.
Always reporting not done properly

Just a suggestion that works for me, in a low traffic forum.
I have no other protection (recaptcha or akismet etc etc) but The Shield plugin. Works great for me also for spam without any work from my part. Blocks things at login/registation and also for comments.
Not to mention the firewall and other protection it provides. Try it for a while.
