Is there any way to remove some of the member activities on the profile page such as questions/answers?

Also, is there a way to remove the 'social networks' text that shows below the profile page?

You can manage access to user profile page  per Usergroup using according options in Usergroup Permissions set. Just edit the Registered usergroup and disable the option if you don't want to show them. There is no individual activity removing option.
