Hi Everyone,

With the latest wpForo Ultimate Member integration, I'm thinking of incorporating it into my current live site.

My questions are quite simple really.

How long is set up likely to take from scratch?

Is the installation quite straight forward and dare I say it, easy?

Does anyone have any tips on what's best to activate within the Ultimate Member plugin and what's best left deactivated?

Lastly, if a wpForo user wanted to take advantage of paying memberships, I understand that I need to purchase the woocommerce paid addon. Is Woocommerce likely to slow my site down significantly?, as I already have a fair few plugins active to increase my sites functionality.

Thanks in advance.

@studio500 I'm a long time Wordpress, UM and wpforo user, and would be happy to help you with this. If you take a look at my site on www.phenomlab.com you'll get an idea of how I've configured mine.

Installation is straightforward but configuration isn't. It'll take you some time to configure as you'll need to create pages, forms, shortcodes, and a fair amount else before you can consider yourself finished.

In terms of what to configure, this really depends on your needs. For paid service integration, yes, you'll need either wooCommerce or memberships pro.

In terms of performance, a plugin will only slow down your site if it's poorly designed and written - much of this also depends on the level of optimisation you have in WordPress, but caching WooCommerce is not a good idea for fairly obvious reasons.

To cut down on administration, I tend to exclude a url called "session" then place wpForo and WooCommerce in that so they are not cached by default. If you have more specific requirements, let me know. My personal recommendation would be to stand up a development site and play with UM first so you understand the required steps.

Thank you for your informative reply, suggestions and kind offer @anonymous3542

I think I will choose to go down the test site route first and try to get as far as I can in order to absorb more of the process requirements and to get an idea of how the plugin functions. I may come back with the odd query if UM support standards don't improve.

You've provided me with a valuable and honest insight as to the time frame and possible issues and for tht alone, I am sincerely grateful.

Looks like phenomlab.com is dead.  Any other example websites?

@vitamin

It's not dead. It's just not doing anything right now. I moved away from wpForo some time ago, hence I'm no longer active here for the time being.

Hi studio500,

  • My questions are quite simple really.
  • How long is set up likely to take from scratch?
  • Is the installation quite straight forward and dare I say it, easy?
  • Does anyone have any tips on what's best to activate within the Ultimate Member plugin and what's best left deactivated?

I think these three questions should be asked in UM support forum. I don't think here you can find better support for UM related questions.

Lastly, if a wpForo user wanted to take advantage of paying memberships, I understand that I need to purchase the woocommerce paid addon. Is Woocommerce likely to slow my site down significantly?, as I already have a fair few plugins active to increase my sites functionality.

First of all there are many other solutions for "paying memberships". Installing a shop builder plugin like WooCommerce is not the best way. WooCommerce is designed for shops not for paying memberships websites. there are many light and simple plugins for paid membership. Please see this search result:

@robert I'm happy to help on the UM side. Their free support is awful (I have a developers license so get preferential treatment 😁), and it can take up to a week before you'll get an answer. In fact, I'm fairly active other there helping others because of this !

They place their focus on paying customers getting priority which is completely the opposite as to how wpForo works

@robert no problems at all. If it means that our community members get the best possible support from other members with experience, then to me that sounds like a fair trade . Admittedly, it's outside of wpForo but also saves the developers time as they can focus on the "to-do" whilst others help out in the community.

I see it as a way of giving back for all the effort that's gone into wpForo and my site wouldn't have been what it is without this plugin
