I use the latest forum software, latest Wordpress, the new theme etc, and when I click "like", it won't show as a like until I refresh the page.

I actually started a new thread on gvectors and specifically the private message addon section. I heavily suspect this to be the problem and not wpfor...

So maybe the new wpforo update does not play well with the private message addon??
