If I install this on my WordPress site and play around - how do I ensure members won't receive any notifications?

I'm sorry, but I don't follow you. Please explain what you mean saying "members won't receive any notifications?"
The members will get an email notification if they subscribe to new topics of a certain forum or subscribe to all new topics and posts, etc.
wpForo doesn't have any automatic subscription options.
Sorry - basically I just wanted to check that if I installed the plugin it wouldn't automatically email all members of my Wordpress site! And I am hoping that I can set it so when I add things members dont get emailed - or I can control who gets the email notifications. Basically what you seem to be saying is that they would have to actively subscribe?
