I have a rather chatty lounge on my forum, which dominates the recent posts lists.

Is there any way to prevent replies in specific subforums from showing up on the recent posts list?

I'm sorry but not. The Recent Posts page doesn't have filters. The only way is customizing the recent.php template file using wpForo template file customization instruction.
