I think you should use the Threaded Forum Layout. Just create a one category (or edit your top category and set layout to threaded) with many forums:
It'll load all recent topics of those forums on the forum home page with better UI and UX:
Make sure you've removed all redirection rules suggested by Percysgrowroom before testing it.
yes, I think you can do this, go to Forum>Setting>Members and then change the url in
"Custom Redirection URLs after following actions:"
the middle one "Redirect after registration" to the URL you want people to land on after sign up 🙂
