is it possible to hide all those other categories on the side of my forum page?

Hi,
Navigate to Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets and remove the widget you have in your sidebar. Be sure to check all sidebars to ensure there are no remaining widgets.
After completing this step, refer to the screenshot below for instructions on how to set the forum to full width:
