Is it possible to remove the menu but just keep the search button?

Sure, please follow the steps below:Â
1. Find the Display Components settings of each board
2. Disable the "Show Forum Menu Bar" option
3 Keep the "Show Search Section in the Forum Menu Bar" option enabled.Â

I tried just that and it doesn't work. It seems the "search" button only shows up when the menu option is enabled. When I follow your steps the entire menu bar as well as the search button is not there. Any other way to keep the search button without the menu?

In this case, I recommend using the wpForo Search widget.Â

As an alternative solution, you can hide the menu items using CSS.
