Hello
I quite like the option to add an image to each section/heading of the forum.
Does anyone know the best/optical image size that should be used?

If you mean size in kb then the smaller you can.
If you mean width, then around 800-900 max, depending on your theme. The lenght is automatically centered.
You will have to test, to find a suitable images, it should not be "complicated" at the bottom or dark, because it is hard to read.
Again, test and test ....
