Users sometimes place links in posts that break them (where you can’t edit as admin from front end and no one else can post) as per attached image and I have to sift through phpmyadmin and fix them.

is there a way of preventing this?

That's fair enough, but it's a challenge for some people when they copy and past links from Google for example, and it's a potential exploit for people with dodgy motives.
