is there a way to show the image directly in the topic instead of the attached link?

when I click on the image link it takes me to another page, how do I make the image appear directly

You should install some additional plugin. Here in wpForo.com we've installed the Lightbox – EverlightBox Gallery plugin. 

I'd also suggest you check out the wpForo Advanced Attachments addon: 

https://gvectors.com/product/wpforo-advanced-attachments/
