I had the impression that if I add a description to a topic it will be displayed somewhere.

Is it something that I've missed in configuration/setup or there is a flow?

This is only for SEO description if you add it for Category. The main forum list may look not good if we add this description in section separator panels (category panels). It may be added in future releases when we found some good looking solution.
