We recently upgraded wordpress and now the extended layout is not working on any of our forums.

I think you made some changes before and after update all caches have been deleted and you see the result now. WP Update doesn't have any relation to such problem. It seems the set of all forum permissions are changed. Please delete all caches, then edit each forum one by one and make sure the Permission settings looks like this:
