New users can register successfully via wpForo, and the WordPress user is created, but no registration / activation email is sent to the user.

Does wpForo rely on WordPress wp_mail() for registration emails, and is SMTP required for user emails to be sent?

Yes, wpForo uses the wp_mail() function.
User registration and account creation are core WordPress features. wpForo only provides the registration form with a different URL and design; all other related functionality is handled by WordPress itself.
