Anything to improve the search sounds great, but a plugin or some other solution to combine search from the main Wordpress posts and forum posts is needed the most. Two different search fields on one site is not feasible by today's standards.

Just the standard search as we know it, but a plugin to combine WP and wpForo search instead of having two search forms. Buddyboss/Buddypress and other community themes and plugins have this. It can be a search results page with tabbed results, but the key is it being all on one page.
