Hello,
I'm looking into using wpForo for my membership site. It looks good -but I do not want users to register or edit their profiles in the forums. There are other places they can do that in the site and having more than one place will be very chaotic.  In short, I want all new members to have rights to the forums.  I can automatically populate

Is that a doable scenario?

Hi,

It looks good -but I do not want users to register

Please navigate in Dashboard to Forums > Settings > Members and set Custom URLs for Login/Register/Logout pages. Also you can Manage wpForo menus in Dashboard > Appearance > Menus admin page, select wpForo Navigation and manage menu items.

Regarding the profile editing question, you can adjust the "Min number of posts to be able to edit profile information" option located in Dashboard > wpForo > Settings > Spam Protection. Consider setting it to 10,000 or a greater value.
