currently, to put a photo in a topic, the only solution is to go through an attached file, choose a file. the photo is then included in the topic as a link, which requires a click to see it; How to get something like 'upload a photo' and have it straight away?

Why then does it not exist on your forum? because there is a paid plugin ?? it is very surprising !!
I don't think it's hard to add a small code in your active theme functions.php file to show image attachments as you want. So, once the code is added the attachment button will do exact the same as you want. You'll attach an image and see it on the post.
