These are independent relationship. When you change WP role it doesn't change wpForo Usergroup and vice versa. So here comes the problem of Paid membership plugins. You're not the firs wpForo user who report this issue. We've already started working on this and are planning to make wpForo Usergroups dynamic connection with WP roles next month. I'm sorry but at the moment the only way is changing usergroups manually till we add this function in core.

I see I'm currently using version 1.4.5 of wpForo, has this feature to sync with WP user roles now been added?
Thats the user data synching and creating forum profile. This is not the role syncing. Roles are already synced. All Administrators become Admin (Usergroup) in WordPress, subscribers become Registered (Usergroup) .
The User Role syncing was mentioned with different mean in last posts. We were talking about one role system for WP and wpForo. this is a different task and will be done in future. This is only for WordPress paid membership plugins. But for the regular Wp / wpForo usage all is ok and all roles/usergroups are already synced well.
