If I want to temporarily close my forum for maintenance, how would I do this?

You can set the forum page as Password Protected or edit forums one by one and set No Access to regular Usergroups.

No "closed for maintenance" message possible so my visitors know it's not a technical glitch?

You can create a dummy page with any message you want and put under the Forum menu. Then close the real forum page with password . Forum page is a simple page with [wpforo] shortcode and you can do everything you want with this page.
