When people go to my site before they log into the forum, this message pops up in a red box in the corner of the screen.
Once logged in you don't see it. Each time you go the page and are not logged in it has a different user name.
Error: The username ---- is not registered on this site. If you are unsure of your username, try your email address instead.

Please note that user registration and account creation are handled by WordPress. wpForo only provides a registration form with a different URL and design.
This kind of issue is usually caused by a conflict with other plugins or the active theme. Please deactivate the plugins and theme one by one, checking after each deactivation to find the source of the problem. Start by deactivating the most recently installed or updated plugins.
Make sure to keep any cache plugins (if you have them) deactivated during this testing process.
Also, don't forget to press Ctrl+F5 twice on the frontend each time before checking.
