I want any references to "topics" in my question layout to be referenced as "question".
"Topic title" > "Your question"
"Add topic" > "Ask a question"
"Topic tags" > "Topic tags of this question"
"Subscribe to this topic" > "Subscribe to this question" etc.
You can change all phrases in Dashboard > Forums > Phrases admin page. Just search, edit and replace them. if you don't find any phrase, click on the [Add new] button, insert phrase key the native version and the phrase value your version.
I have extended layouts as well. I would like to keep those as topics, and questions as questions.

I have wpForo 1.6.1 and cannot change the label of the "ask a question" button in the Q/A Forum. It is not available in the list of phrases that I can change. Do I need a newer update or is this not yet available?
@tims-forum, if some phrase is missing you can use the [Add new] button in Forums > Phrases admin page and add it. Insert the identical English version as Phrase key and your changed version as Phrase Value. Then delete all caches and check it. Make sure you've not duplicated those phrases. Do a proper search before adding new phrases.
Doh! Actually the issue is I didn't notice there are 2 pages of phrases. Ask a question was on the 2nd page. All good now!
