I can't offer anything other than to say this was happening to my new users as well.

To circumvent I set everything to "0 (zero)" in  "New Registered User" controls  under "Tools" and it stopped. Not a solution I grant you but needs must.

As you say it seems to be treating "words" as links when they are not. I will watch this thread with interest.

It's because of spam protection for new users. The thing is, it doesn't seem to just remove links -- it also seems to randomly insert "removed link" throughout a new user's posts until they've reached the number of posts you've set in the spam settings.

For my forum, I allow new users to post links and upload files. However, I do require that their first post be moderated. This allows me to see if they seem to be a legitimate user.

Ok, the "linked removed" comes from link settings for new users. I get this. But there is no link posted anywhere.

I did some tests, and i found that the words "meeting" and "event" for example  are treated as a links in a new user post. Not sure why.
