I'm about to migrate from PHPBB to WPforo. I'm going to run it on dev WP site first but import from live phpbb site.
When I import does the phpbb forum stay as it is so that I can test WPforo and switch over when I'm ready?
Does anything get altered on the phpbb forum?

Yes, sure! You can keep the phpBB forum. However, any new topics or posts created after the initial migration will not be transferred.
To test wpForo, you can first migrate the forum to a development website. If new topics or posts are added in the meantime, you will need to perform the migration again.
