Why is there no way to delete a member cover image and have it auto revert to the pre-set default?

Sure we can do pointer events or display none but it should be a core function and not require custom CSS.

Because this is a new feature. There will be lots of options to control profile cover image. We'll add either "Can change cover image" in Usergroup permissions or an option to disable changing cover image for all (excerpt admins and mods) in upcoming versions.
