When a user logs in, they are taken to a wordpress dashboard. I don't want this to happen. I've changed the redirect URL after login in the forum members settings to redirect to the homepage, but it doesn't take me there. Any suggestions?

By default wpForo doesn't redirect users to dashboard. I think this is not wpForo issue and comes from other plugins or from the theme.

Please remove all redirections and settings you've made for that.

Navigate to Dashboard > Forums > Settings > Features admin page and make sure these two options are enabled:
