I saw new release of Wpforo 1.9.9.2 today. Its explanation says that this is the pre-update of V2.0. Big updated version is in few days later. I have expected long time for this update. So, I am very happy and excited after this news. I hope its new properties satisfy our expectations. Thank you to Wpforo team for all their efforts. You are the best 👍

I'm excited as well, but at the same time worried, because I'm suspecting that most if not all of my CSS customizations will break 🙁

Does anyone which has upgraded to the beta feels like showcasing their forum here, so we could take a look at what's about to come?

Hi @realact,

Please note that forum softwares are not like WordPress or other CMS's. 90% of forum features depends on the forum template files. The major version comes with fully changed theme and template files to bring lots of new features. There is no way to keep the same look and keep the same CSS customization on the new major release. You should not update your forum if you think the wpForo v2 layouts and styles are not better than your customized style.

The old "Classic" wpForo theme will no longer be supported, so all customizations will be lost for sure. You'll get a new look and new features with the new wpForo major version. Here is the plugin update alert you'll see once the v2.0.0 is released:

@robert can we already access that page with Update Instructions? Would be nice to already have a bit of a read through of that.

@robert Oh yeah, I'm aware that being marked as a "Major Version Update" it'll definitely contain drastic changes that would probably render my CSS customizations null. And now you've just confirmed that not even the current themes in versions 1.x will be supported anymore. So I'm prepared for this, but it'll probably take some time to update this time.

I just hope the new theme is really more modern and at least have some curves to it like rounded corners and avatars by default etc. Who knows, maybe I even like it and keep it as it is by default. We'll see.

@realact exactly, somewhere this is pretty much out of the blue and it would be great if a demo site of v2.0 would have been setup to showcase the changes.

Not upgrading to v2.0 until all is probably tested on a test/staging environment would have been my approach anyway so I'm not 100% worried that things will break unless the plugin get updated automatically which I'm going to double check in a second (to be sure).

@golabs I know, but creating a staging environment is such a pain, the site we maintain is a very big site and the forum has over 23k registered members. So that gives you an idea 🙂

BTW if you look at the link that @Robert posted above you can take a peak at some screenshots on how the new theme will probably look.

@realact that's an impressive member base you've got going on. The forum I run is now almost at the first 1K of registered members.

I already took a look at the screenshots but I want to get started as soon as possible with assessing the overall impact so I can plan the actions required to move to v2.

Why not wait until THIS site is updated and then see everything clearly.

Also people that run medium to large sites, should never update right away in anything that contains so many drastic changes.

@Robert

You said before that users upgrading to v. 2 were going to have the option to either retain the "old" layout (and preserve their customizations) or move to the "new" layout (and lose their customizations).

When did this change?

@fawp,

You can activate the old Classic theme in Dashboard > wpForo > Themes admin page and check if the customizations works. But this is not recommended because the Classic theme doesn't have all new features. Moreover it's deprecated and it will no longer be supported.

Thanks Martin. Just so I am clear, the Classic theme for now is staying, but it will not be supported in the future?

I appreciate that any new feature would not be available on the Classic theme, but if that theme is still available it may allow for a smoother transition, and give some people time to migrate to the new one.

This was a disaster on my site when it auto updated today — all the add ons deactivated and when I tried to reactivate them they caused an internal server error and crashed the site. Attachments stopped displaying and attaching. New topics couldn't post. I had to reinstall a back up from 8/2 and I turned off auto updates for wpforo and am just going to site pretty on the classic version.

@seemaxrun,

As it has been lots of plaice mentioned, you should deactivate all wpForo old addons before updating wpForo to 2.0. The old addons are not compatible with v2. We've released new versions for all addons to make compatible them with wpForo 2.0. All new versions of addons are 3.0.0. So just make sure you use 3.0.x versions of addons with 2.0.x version of wpForo.

Now, please, first update all your addons to 3.0.0 version then update wpForo. All will work fine in this way. Also, please make sure you don't have an old Go2wpForo plugin installed, if so, just delete it.

I see that the disaster is the automatic-update, which is not intuitive. The automatic update should never do that if the version change is major. It should never update from  1.x.x to 2.x.x automatically, this is a big issue of WordPress core. On the other hand, you should never turn on the automatic update for large plugins like forum plugin or shop.

@robert Thanks for your response. I'm not sure why auto update was on there it's off with everything else, possibly an oversight on my part. (A bad oversight.) Thanks for the info on the add-ons too. These are purchased add-ons is there an additional fee for the updates on those? I'm a little fragged from the panic and ensued when the forum and then the site crashed but I'll be keeping an eye on the new forum update and considering it for the future.

What are some new features that would make it look like a good move to update and work through the headache of re-doing customization and themes and add-ons and such?

I can explain my impression about the new interface so as follows: It is more modern but more complicated because of plain white weighted appearence. It must be a little more colourfull to distinguish the forum parts.
