Hi,
A forum subscriber reports that when logged in, the page that appears does not display the forum but displays the page in the screenshot with the sentence "Register or login below...", and a "Forum Home" icon.
How can this extra step to view the forum be avoided?

that part of the page is related to your theme, not to wpForo.
and a "Forum Home" icon.
That's wpForo user profile page, if the users get redirected after logging in, than you should Navigate to Dashboard > wpForo > Settings > Login & Registration, and make sure that Custom Redirection URLs after following actions: options Redirect after login field is empty.
Thank you @Chris, your suggestion seems to have enabled that upon login the forum is immediately visible instead of the user being in their profile. You are referring to 1 field (that should be empty) from what I understand, however there are 3 fields in that section, please see screenshot. I have emptied them all, will that be fine?
Those fields are empty by default when wpForo is installed.
If you don't want to redirect users to the needed page after one of those following actions, you should let them empty.
